What I do: conference interpreter (simultaneous mode) at an internet marketing event featuring several international speakers, through a three-day event.
Simultaneous interpreting is the most common service interpreters provide. Simultaneous interpreting is a service involving an experienced interpreters sitting in a booth with microphone and headset. The interpreter receives input from the speaker through earphones and then translates spoken words into the language of the listeners, simultaneously.
When there is no booth to sit (usually soundproof and overviewing the conference room), interpreters can use portable equipment called bidule, which is very useful for interpreters working simultaneously to be able to work as efficiently as possible. It is impossible for conference interpreters to work without booth/bidule and headset/microphone.
In this kind of interpreting a team of two (or more) interpreters is needed: we help each other while working, giving some brain rest to each other. In this case Elisabetta Carraro was my “booth mate”.
More often than not interpreters have to deal with tough topics, lack of slides, speakers who are not used to be interpreted/to work with interpreters.
The tougher it gets, the more stimulated interpreters are.
Internet marketing requires a good deal of research, terminology analysis and glossary preparation; the concept are not at all easy-to-get if you are a neophyte. Therefore for interpreters it is fundamental to have time and material to work on the suitable preparation to offer the best service possible.
